A traveling carnival has assembled its parade floats in what appears to be a midway or fairground, and someone has decided that bright yellow paint, a peaked pagoda roof, and the inexplicable addition of a large rooster constitute a coherent entertainment concept. The float sits low on a trailer bed, flanked by matching yellow mechanical birds and attended by the standard carnival crew—people in work clothes who have learned to move heavy painted plywood around without asking questions. A utility pole rises behind it like a lighthouse in a sea of municipal indifference, and the whole thing has the air of a mobile amusement that will appear in some smaller American town for one weekend, generate moderate excitement, and then vanish. Someone believed this would amuse families enough to pay admission. The rooster never moves, the paint fades in the sun, and by next season it will need repairs.
