A community organiser somewhere in mid-America spent weeks designing and building a pasteboard palace—a pagoda-roofed gateway decorated with red spirals and flanked by flower beds—on the theory that an ornate structure on a float or at a fair would elevate an ordinary afternoon into something memorable. A man in a blue shirt stands in the foreground observing the results, his expression a neutral mask suggesting either mild satisfaction or the exhaustion of a volunteer who has just spent his Saturday cementing ceramic tiles and painting plywood. Mountains rise hazy in the background, placing this in the West or Southwest. The whole construction has the earnest, slightly wobbly proportions of something that seemed grander in the committee meeting than it turned out in reality. Everything about it—the pastels, the amateur painted details, the assumption that ornament equals occasion—captures the moment when small-town civic events still believed in the civilising power of a handmade formal gesture.
