A girl in a blue dress stands on the sidewalk in front of a storefront arcade, positioned next to a painted sign announcing the business is open. The shop window displays pinball machines and the usual attractions of a mid-century arcade—casual, inexpensive amusement meant for neighborhood foot traffic. She has been placed there for the photograph, dressed up for what was understood as a normal family outing: a visit to the local arcade on a shopping street. The wooden planter boxes with flowers flank the entrance, a detail that suggests the owner took pride in the storefront's appearance, the same pride that led to painting a fresh sandwich-board sign on what may have been the arcade's opening day. Behind her the street is empty in the way only a mid-century American downtown could be empty—no cars visible, just sidewalk and commerce, before shopping malls drained these main streets of their casual congregation. She stands in the precise moment when an arcade was not yet disreputable, when it was simply where a child went with family spending money, before the category solidified into something worrisome.
