Someone paid good money to sit under a metal awning and look at trees, which was the entire point of a 1960s river cruise through the northern bush. The rail is chain-link, the deck chairs are stacked like folding evidence of an off-season, and the pipes overhead once held a canvas roof that some optimistic operator assumed would keep out weather it never did.
The river itself is doing the actual work here, carrying silt-gray water past a shoreline that has not changed in ten thousand years and does not care that it is now a tourist attraction. Passengers on these northern excursion boats were sold on the idea of untouched wilderness, delivered from the comfort of a snack bar and a life jacket rack just out of frame.
Nobody on this deck expected the forest to do anything except look impressive and hold still, which, being a forest, it obligingly did.
The historian's note
River excursion boats operated widely across subarctic Canada and Alaska in the 1960s, carrying tourists along waterways such as the Yukon or Mackenzie systems that had earlier served as primary transportation corridors before roads and airstrips reduced their commercial importance. These vessels repurposed old riverboat routes, once used for freight and mail delivery to remote settlements, into scenic tours for a growing postwar leisure-travel market.
The covered upper deck with a retractable or fixed awning was a standard feature on these boats, protecting passengers from sun and rain while preserving unobstructed views of the shoreline. Chain-link or wire mesh railings, as seen here, were common safety additions required as tourism regulations tightened through the decade.
The boreal forest and river bluff visible in the background are characteristic of the Yukon and Mackenzie drainage basins, regions that became popular destinations for wilderness-themed tourism during this period, marketed as an accessible glimpse of the Canadian and Alaskan frontier.
