Tannin-stained water the color of strong tea charges through a channel of exposed granite, the kind of rapids that a river produces when it has been doing exactly this for ten thousand years and has no particular interest in what anyone thinks about it. The pine forest pressing in on both banks is the boreal fringe that defines the upper Midwest's idea of wilderness — not dramatic enough for a national park, familiar enough that generations of Midwesterners have driven four hours to stand beside it and feel they've earned something.

Door County, Wisconsin, built its reputation on gentler water: the bay side, the harbors, the charter fishing boats. A river running hard through conifers over bare rock is a different argument entirely, one the peninsula makes quietly in its interior while the tourists work their way up the lakeside from fish fry to fish fry. Whoever stood on that bank in 2002 was either portaging a canoe or had simply walked far enough from the gift shops to find the place the brochures left out.
