A lake of impossible blue stretches beneath a sky that someone in the 1960s believed proved the earth was worth photographing in color, and they were right to believe it, though they did not know yet that this particular blue would soon become a marketing problem. The forest edges the water with the kind of dense conifer stand that suggests latitude and water depth enough to stay cold year-round, the kind of place where a postcard manufacturer saw an opportunity to sell the idea of unspoiled nature to people who lived in houses arranged in grids. The white-barked birches at the shore—the ones that caught the light and earned their place in the composition—were a detail the photographer understood, the way you learn which trees photograph well when you are making a living selling wilderness. The clouds above hold themselves in that cottony formation that appears in every brochure from this era, the decade when color film made landscape tourism feel like a moral duty and sitting in your living room with a scenic view became a kind of patriotic act.
