A man in a small boat sits alone in the middle distance of a lake rimmed by coniferous forest, the kind of wilderness that in the mid-twentieth century still seemed infinite to people planning a quiet afternoon. The boater appears to have paddled out to the exact center of the water, which suggests either the fishing was good in the middle or the point of the expedition was simply to be far from anything that required him to talk to anyone. The color saturation and the grain of the film stock mark this as a traveller's slide from the 1960s, when middle-class families began buying cabins in the northern woods on the theory that solitude was something you could photograph and share. The rocky shore in the foreground is slightly out of focus, the boater is perfectly framed in the middle of an empty lake, and the whole composition suggests whoever held the camera knew exactly what they were doing — pointing at the idea of alone rather than at the fact of it.
