A church steeple rises across a still lake in what appears to be Central Europe, the kind of postcard-perfect vista that tourists in the 1960s were meant to collect and send home as proof they had found authenticity. The composition is framed by bare winter trees—deliberate on the photographer's part, the leaflessness being considered picturesque rather than bleak—and a strip of foliage in the upper left that anchors the scene as something real rather than painted. The color saturation suggests Kodachrome or Ektachrome film stock, that particular blue that made everything look slightly more romantic than it was. Someone stood here with a camera believing that the view itself was the story, that a lake, a church, and the right light were enough. They were probably right, in 1962.
