Two people lean over the railing of a freshly stained wooden footbridge, doing what visitors to Wisconsin's northwoods have always done: standing over moving water and watching it go by, which costs nothing and apparently never gets old. The tannin-stained current boiling around the exposed bedrock below them has that particular Door County character — the dark, tea-colored water that comes from draining through centuries of forest duff before it finds a streambed to argue with.
The bridge itself is the kind of practical, well-built park infrastructure that a county or state trail system installs and then photographs to prove the grant money was spent. Arched steel rail, plank deck, new enough that the stain hasn't yet weathered to gray — someone in a county office was probably very pleased with this bridge in 2002.
What the two visitors on it are almost certainly not thinking about is the bridge. They are thinking about the water, which has been doing this without the bridge for a very long time and will keep doing it long after the planks need replacing.
