Someone at this campus moved fast. The lettering across the new brick-and-glass student union reads John F. Kennedy Memorial Union, the kind of naming decision that in the years right after 1963 got made at a hundred schools at once, often before the landscaping had even filled in.
The building itself is pure early-1960s institutional optimism: a slab tower of glass punched into a long brick wing, the sort of modernist civic architecture that assumed efficiency and idealism were the same thing. A boxy sedan sits at the curved entrance drive, and a lone figure crosses the plaza, dwarfed by a building designed to make undergraduates feel like the future had already arrived.
The young trees ringing the circular lawn are barely taller than the lamppost, planted at the same time as the building and just as unfinished. Everyone involved assumed both would fill out with age, which, eventually, they did.
The historian's note
The building shown carries the name John F. Kennedy Memorial Union, identifying it as a college or university student center dedicated in honor of the assassinated president. Following Kennedy's death in November 1963, colleges, streets, schools, and public facilities across the United States were renamed for him in a wave of civic memorialization that continued through the decade.
The architecture is characteristic of American campus construction of the early-to-mid 1960s: brick masses combined with curtain-wall glass towers, built rapidly to accommodate the postwar enrollment boom driven by the baby-boom generation reaching college age. Student unions of this era were designed as the social and administrative hub of campus life, housing dining, meeting, and recreational space under one roof.
The automobile and landscaping visible are consistent with the building being newly completed or recently dedicated at the time the scene was recorded, placing the photograph within a few years of the structure's opening.
