Somebody, a generation or two earlier, planted these trees close to the house on the theory that shade was an unqualified good and that a young sapling would always stay a modest, manageable size. By the 1950s the theory has been thoroughly tested and found wanting: the leaded windows and screened porch are visible only in fragments, and the house has become something you glimpse rather than something you see.

The lawn itself tells the other half of the story, mowed in careful stripes right up to the hedge line, because a well-kept yard was still a moral statement in this era, evidence of a household run on schedule. The screened porch, dim and half-hidden, was where the family actually lived on summer evenings, the formal rooms behind those tall windows being reserved for company that rarely came.

Nobody in this picture seems bothered that the trees have won. That is the quiet comedy of postwar landscaping: people planted for shade, got shade, and then spent the next thirty years trimming just enough to prove the house was still in there.
