Somebody spent the winter bolting this thing together in a garage, and now it is airborne over a grass strip while a small crowd of men in short sleeves watches with the studied calm of people who understand exactly how little margin for error is built into a homemade airplane. The aircraft climbing overhead is a pusher-prop contraption of the kind amateur builders favored in the era before the FAA had fully worked out what to do with them: open framework, a single engine mounted backward, and a pilot sitting out front with nothing much between him and the propeller wash.
On the ground, more evidence of the same impulse. One plane's tail carries a hand-painted "For Sale" sign, because in this hobby a finished aircraft is often just a fundraising vehicle for the next, better one. Another, marked "Siggler," waits its turn, and a man in an airport-security cap stands near the wingtips as if his presence alone constitutes crowd control.
Everyone here is doing the same math: watching the machine in the air and privately estimating whether it will still be airworthy in ten minutes. Nobody looks worried. That, more than the airplanes, is the period detail worth noticing.
