The paint job on N379 was not applied by any factory. Homebuilders in the 1960s tended to treat their aircraft the way some men treat their cars, which is to say the machine had to look as fast as it flew, and a hand-laid starburst of blue and white said more about the owner's confidence than any logbook could. The man in the white shirt walking toward it has the unhurried gait of someone who built the thing himself and intends to let you know it.

Behind him the grass field is doing double duty as runway, parking lot, and campground, the informal arrangement typical of the Experimental Aircraft Association gatherings that were, by this decade, drawing amateur builders from across the country to compare rivets and swap opinions on engine choices. A sedan is parked wing-to-wing with the airplanes, because in this world a car was just a slower vehicle that happened to be present. The tent in the distance suggests someone had arranged for shade, food, or both, on the theory that aviation enthusiasm alone would not sustain a man through a Midwestern afternoon.

A second striped tail, marked C713C, sits further off, evidence that N379's owner was not the only one who had spent a winter in a garage convinced his airplane would turn heads. Judging by the crowd of similarly earnest little aircraft parked wingtip to wingtip, he was right, and also entirely unoriginal.
