A medieval hilltop town clings to a slope like something built by people who had not yet decided where permanently to live, its pale stone houses stacked with the confidence of an era that believed tight quarters and shared walls were the price of civilization. The valley below spreads green and ordered—the kind of prosperous agricultural landscape that existed in a photograph, taken in color stock that renders the moment as though it were a postcard someone bought to prove they had been somewhere beautiful. Snow caps the distant ridges, establishing that this is central or southern Europe in winter, the season when such towns looked most like the illustrations in history books. The church spire rises at the town's edge with the gravity of an institution that still mattered, still commanded the eye and the budget, in a Europe that had recently learned to rebuild what it had spent six years destroying.
