A rocky ridge crowned with pale boulders rises through a dense coniferous forest, the kind of landscape that American tourists in the mid-twentieth century were encouraged to visit as proof that the continent held unspoiled wonders worth the drive. The composition suggests someone stood at a distance with a camera and decided the scene deserved recording—not because anything was happening there, but because it was the sort of thing that happened nowhere else, which is what made it worth seeing and photographing. The trees are thick enough that the actual topography almost disappears until you notice the stone, at which point the whole hillside reorganizes itself in your eye. This was the era when Americans began driving to look at rocks and trees as though they were art objects that had been placed there for the purpose of confirming the nation's own grandeur. The photograph has the quality of a tourist record: competent, direct, and motivated by the belief that raw landscape, seen and captured on film, represented a kind of democratic inheritance.
