Someone has laid a rock hammer across a slab of polished bedrock, and in the field-geology trade of the 1960s that small act counted as scientific rigor. The hammer supplies the scale a photograph cannot argue with, so that decades later nobody has to guess whether the scratches running across the stone are inches or feet apart. The scratches themselves are glacial striations, the signature a moving ice sheet leaves when it drags rock and grit across bedrock like sandpaper the size of a continent.
The geologist who framed this shot was operating on the confident assumption that a smoothed, grooved rock face is more interesting than almost anything else in the forest, an assumption correct only if you already know what you are looking at. Everyone else on the trail that day presumably walked past it toward the view. The scientist, notebook in hand, stayed behind to photograph proof that a glacier had been there first and had left its signature on the way out.
No peak, no lake, no human figure earns a place in the frame, because none of that was the point. The point was the rock, the hammer, and the quiet certainty that somewhere in a filing cabinet this slide would outlive the trip that produced it.
