On the image

The iron-orange and chalk-white mineral crust at the rim of a Yellowstone hot spring tells you exactly where geothermal heat meets cooling air — the bacteria that produce those colors thrive only within a precise temperature band, a fact that in the 1960s was still being worked out by scientists who found it difficult to explain to park visitors why the prettiest parts of the pools were the most dangerous. The cracked surface reads like a slow-motion record of evaporation and redeposition, each fracture line a season's worth of mineral accumulation pulled apart by contraction.

In the 1960s, Yellowstone's thermal features were still casually accessible — boardwalks were sparse, fencing was minimal, and a significant number of tourists got exactly as close as this camera did, reasoning that if it looked solid it probably was. The National Park Service spent much of that decade learning, often from unpleasant experience, that geothermal crust thick enough to photograph is not necessarily thick enough to stand on.

What the camera caught is the boundary condition — the precise line where orange thermophilic mat gives way to pale silica deposit — which turns out to be one of the more scientifically significant edges in North American geology, framed here by someone who almost certainly thought they were taking a pretty picture of the colors.
