On the image

Someone in the 1970s deemed this particular arrangement of rock layers worthy of a photograph, presumably to study its ancient secrets. The Earth, which had spent untold millennia arranging these strata, was likely unimpressed by the sudden attention.

The darker, blocky material on top sits stubbornly above the lighter, more weathered layers, a geological fact that required specialized tools and several years of higher education to fully appreciate. Small yellow markers indicate where human intellect attempted to impose order on millions of years of natural deposition, an optimistic but often necessary gesture in fieldwork.

This painstaking examination of exposed rock was a cornerstone of 20th-century earth science, where every visible crack and color change hinted at vast, slow-moving processes. The rocks, of course, were in no hurry to explain themselves.
