Someone pulled the car over for this one. A quarried limestone wall, cut in the blocky, deliberate faces that machinery leaves and nature never does, rises out of a tangle of scrub and second-growth trees that had already begun reclaiming the site by the time the shutter clicked. In the 1950s a cliff like this counted as a worthwhile stop on a family drive, proof that the new color film could bring home a piece of scenery the way the eye actually saw it.

That was the whole point of carrying a color camera on vacation: permanence, in full hue, forever. The quarry has long since gone quiet, its benches and blast marks softening under moss and sapling growth, exactly as abandoned industrial ground always does once nobody needs the stone anymore.

What nobody planning that stop accounted for was the film itself keeping its own schedule of decay, the greens and grays of the actual afternoon slowly drifting toward the spectral cyan-blue now fixed over the whole scene. The cliff wanted to be remembered accurately. The chemistry had other plans.
