Somebody in the 1960s dug a hole big enough to matter, took the coal out, and left the hole to become somebody else's problem. That is more or less how surface mining worked in this decade, before reclamation laws made companies pretend to care what a hillside looked like when they were done with it. The water that fills the pit now is not a lake in any traditional sense; it is groundwater and rain doing the only thing they can do when a valley has had its bottom removed.
The blue tint of the water is a chemistry lesson nobody asked for, the kind of unnatural clarity that shows up when a pit face exposes mineral seams to fresh air and rain for the first time in geologic history. The bare spoil piles around it, gray and terraced like a bad wedding cake, were considered a finished product once the coal seam gave out. Somewhere a company logged this as reclaimed land.
A few trees have started reclaiming it themselves, pushing up through the gravel with the patience of a species that has outlasted worse. Nature was not consulted on the original plan, and it shows no sign of holding a grudge, mostly because it has nowhere else to be.
The historian's note
This scene depicts a surface coal mine, most likely in the Appalachian coalfields of the eastern United States, photographed during the 1960s. The pit was created by strip-mining methods common in the period: overburden was removed and piled as spoil to expose coal seams beneath, leaving terraced gray hillsides once extraction was complete. The pooled water in the foreground is typical of abandoned mine pits, where groundwater fills the excavated void once mining operations cease.
Federal regulation of strip-mine reclamation did not exist in a meaningful form until the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977; prior to that law, mining companies in most states had minimal obligation to restore land after extraction. Scenes like this one, showing raw spoil banks and unremediated pit lakes, were characteristic of the pre-regulatory landscape across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and similar coal-producing regions.
The bluish coloration of the pooled water often results from mineral leaching, particularly iron and sulfur compounds exposed by the excavation, a visual signature frequently associated with acid mine drainage.
