Around him, neighbors occupy the shared space between the apartment blocks with the casual permanence of people for whom this was the day's gathering place: children in bright print dresses, women in summer clothing, other adults conducting the minor business of the neighborhood. The brick buildings with their metal-frame windows form the walls of what appears to be a working-class residential courtyard in a Chinese city, the kind of space where several families' lives overlapped in plain view. He looks directly at the camera with the expression of a man who has been caught mid-errand and has accepted that a foreigner with a camera is now part of the morning's inventory of events.
The historian's note
This courtyard represents the standard residential architecture of China's urban working class in the 1960s, during the Cultural Revolution period. The multi-story apartment blocks with shared courtyards were the dominant housing form in Chinese cities following the Communist takeover, replacing the traditional hutong neighborhoods. These spaces served simultaneously as housing, marketplace, laundry ground, and social forum—the courtyard was where transactions happened, children played, and neighborhood hierarchy played out. The presence of a foreign photographer documenting ordinary daily life in such a space during this period is itself historically significant; color photography of Chinese urban domestic life from the 1960s remains comparatively rare in Western archives.
