この中庭は、文化大革命期における1960年代の中国都市労働者階級の標準的な住宅建築を代表している。共有の中庭を備えた複数階建てのアパート棟は、共産党の権力奪取後の中国都市における支配的な住宅形式であり、伝統的な胡同地区に代わるものであった。これらの空間は同時に住宅、市場、洗濯物干し場、社会フォーラムとして機能していた。中庭はそこで取引が行われ、子どもたちが遊び、近所の階級関係が展開する場所であった。この時期に、このような空間における日常的な生活を記録する外国人写真家の存在それ自体が歴史的に重要である。1960年代の中国都市家庭生活のカラー写真は、西洋のアーカイブに比較的少ない。
