A young man in a pressed white shirt and dark trousers stands alone in the narrow cobbled street of a Spanish colonial quarter, posing directly at the camera with the self-conscious stillness of someone aware he is being documented. Behind him rises a fortress-scaled ashlar wall to the left—Inca stonework that has held for five hundred years—and ahead, a parade of whitewashed mansions with carved wooden balconies overhang the street in the manner of buildings that spent centuries being important without quite meaning to. The architecture announces conquest and settlement in the same breath: Spanish design imposed on Inca masonry, the colonial order rendered permanent in stone and wood. He stands between these registers of power as though they were merely backdrop, dressed in the Western outfit that was becoming mandatory for any man who wanted to be photographed, let alone believed.
The historian's note
Cuzco, the ancient Inca capital, was restructured as a Spanish colonial city after the conquest of the sixteenth century. The city's characteristic architecture combines Inca stonework foundations with Spanish colonial buildings, many featuring the carved wooden balconies visible here. By the 1950s, Cuzco was a major destination for mid-century color photography tourism and documentary work. The whitewashed facades, stone streets, and narrow passages remained largely unchanged from the seventeenth century, making the city a living exhibit of colonial Peru. The young man's Western dress and formal posture reflect the mid-twentieth-century cultural assimilation and modernization occurring throughout South American cities, even in historically indigenous centers.
