Somebody planted that hedge decades before this picture was taken, with the confidence of a person who assumed a village lane would always be maintained by someone else. By the 1950s it had won the argument entirely, reducing the road to a single cracked lane of asphalt while the greenery pressed in like it had somewhere to be.

The church itself did not get the memo. Its onion-domed bell tower and arched gatehouse still stand with the unhurried dignity of an institution built to outlast fashion, farmland, and whoever was supposed to be trimming the shrubbery. The iron gate under the arch is shut, which in a Catholic village of that era meant nothing more dramatic than it being a weekday afternoon.

Whoever framed this shot was clearly more interested in the spire than the hedge, though the hedge is what actually dominates the composition. It is the small, recurring irony of amateur photography: the thing you meant to capture is the thing the world keeps trying to grow over.
