Sometime in the summer of 2002, someone stood on or near a weathered wooden deck in Door County and pointed a camera sideways into the trees — whether by accident or artistic intent is a question the result does not resolve in favor of either. The deck's gray planking has the look of something built in an optimistic weekend and then quietly surrendered to the peninsula's combination of hard winters and aggressive green growth, which in Door County operates less like a season and more like a policy.

The mix of conifers, flowering shrubs, and tangled understory pressing against the boards is the standard Door County summer situation: the vegetation that made the place look like a postcard in May has, by July, decided to reclaim whatever ground it was temporarily asked to vacate. A wild shrub in full white bloom holds the center of the scene with complete indifference to the deck's property claim.

The camera was held — or loaded into a pocket — at a ninety-degree rotation, which is how this particular corner of northern Wisconsin ended up documented as though the trees were growing sideways. It captures, accurately enough, the feeling of a place that was always slightly more interested in being a forest than a vacation destination.
