Sherborn in early summer 2002, and someone's backyard had reached the point where the garden was winning. The brick outbuilding and weathered cedar fence in the lower half suggest a property old enough to have accumulated several layers of intention — the structure built for one purpose, the pergola added later, the planting scheme that started orderly and arrived here, at a full-throated riot of cosmos, bachelor's buttons, and what appears to be a sprawling mass of larkspur going in every direction it pleased.

The whole composition is upside down, which is either a handling accident or an editorial statement about the relative importance of architecture and horticulture. Given the ratio of flowering plant to building visible here, the garden makes the stronger case.

This is the kind of New England backyard that accumulates over decades of people planting things and then moving away, each successor adding something and removing nothing. By 2002 the result was less a designed space than a negotiated settlement between the owners and whatever came up on its own.
