On the image

Someone photographed this house without ever getting out of the car, which explains the red blur crowding the bottom corner and the crooked, hurried angle of the whole composition. The pink bungalow with its jalousie windows and sunburst gable was exactly the kind of colonial-era architecture that mid-century tourists considered charmingly foreign and worth documenting on the fly, the theory being that a moving vehicle was an acceptable substitute for actually stopping to look.

The flowering shrubs along the garden wall got more care in the framing than the drainage culvert cut into the curb below them, though the culvert is the more honest artifact of the place. Tropical islands build their infrastructure for rain first and appearances second, a fact invisible to anyone touring by rental car with a camera propped on the dashboard.

A second roof and a palm tree crowd the background, proof that the photographer kept driving before deciding which house was actually worth the film.
