A two-story white stucco house stands surrounded by the kind of lush botanical chaos that only tropical climates and absent pruning can achieve. The arched windows on the upper floor were clearly designed with restraint in mind—clean modernist lines, practical shutters—but the vines have won. Someone planted flowering vines around the lower terrace in the belief that a little ivy would be charming, and then left it to the climate for several seasons. The banana plants and whatever else is thriving on the right side of the property suggest this is either a wealthy household that employs a gardener who takes suggestions about what constitutes improvement, or an abandoned dream of orderly living that the tropics simply refused to respect. The clear blue sky and the quality of the color film mark this as post-1950, the kind of amateur travel or property documentation that a visiting American might have shot to show the folks back home. The house itself announces money—two stories, a balcony, those expensive arched windows—but the vegetation declares that money alone cannot impose order on the climate, no matter how much one paid for the lot.
