Somewhere in suburban California, a front yard has become a small lake, and someone thought to document it before doing anything about it. The house behind the water is a white stucco bungalow with a red clay-tile roof and diamond-paned windows — the kind of Spanish Colonial Revival style that developers built across Southern California in the 1930s and sold as the sensible American dream in a climate that was reliably sunny and therefore immune to this sort of thing.

The neatly trimmed foundation shrubs are still standing their ground at the waterline, performing their ornamental duty with the dignity of minor officials whose jurisdiction has been flooded out from under them. The lawn, invisible below the brown standing water, represents the 1950s suburban homeowner's deepest civic commitment — a commitment that would have to wait.

Whoever took this record did so from the street or driveway, at a cautious distance, the way you photograph something that is both a problem and, briefly, a spectacle. In California in the 1950s, a good rainy season was what everyone said they wanted, right up until the moment the front yard disagreed.
