A modest house sits alone in the scrubland, its white walls now yellowed and weathered, surrounded by the kind of vegetation that thrives when water is scarce and maintenance is sporadic. Two automobiles of the 1950s vintage are parked in the yard, the way people in that era simply left their cars wherever they happened to stop, no garage, no driveway protocol, just flat desert ground serving as an extension of the property. The tree shadows cut sharp geometric lines across the building, the light so bright and unforgiving that the whole scene reads like a document: this is how people lived at the edge of town, self-sufficient and far from anyone's inspection, the sparse yard and the unpaved approach suggesting this was as far out as you could reasonably go and still have electricity. Someone who owned this place believed they were building something permanent in a landscape that had other ideas. The photograph catches the moment just before abandonment, or perhaps just after someone stopped trying.
