On the image

Someone stood at the edge of a gravel lot with a camera loaded with color slide film, a small luxury in 1950s Japan, and pointed it at a temple hall whose curved tile roof had been engineered centuries before anyone worried about exposure settings. The bare trees in front of the building were clearly not planted with photographers in mind, since they slice directly across the facade, but whoever took this picture seems to have decided the hall was worth documenting anyway, obstruction and all.

In the foreground a plain wooden shed sits with its corrugated roof, the kind of utility structure every property needs and no one photographs on purpose. It ended up in frame regardless, a reminder that the sacred and the practical share real estate everywhere, including on the grounds of a temple that has survived long enough to need a toolshed.

The winter sky is doing the one thing skies are reliably good for, which is providing contrast, and the roof tiles catch the low sun in a way that suggests this was taken on a clear cold morning when the light was doing more work than the photographer was.
