On the image
She has stopped at the fence the way every visitor to an Alpine village eventually does, one hand on the rail, chin lifted, striking the pose that says I was here without needing to say anything else. Behind her the farmhouse does the real work of the picture, its dark timber balcony and shuttered windows built for a winter that has nothing to do with the woman in the white blouse and tartan skirt currently enjoying it as scenery.
The woodpile stacked along the fence line is not decoration. Those logs, split and racked with the obsessive neatness the region is famous for, are a full year's fuel arranged by someone who has done this every autumn of their life and will do it again regardless of who photographs it. She is on holiday; the house behind her is not.
Someone back home would eventually be shown this slide and told it was Austria, or maybe Bavaria, the way all such trips got flattened into a single postcard memory. The fence, chosen for its good light and solid rail to lean on, has outlasted the explanation of exactly where it stood.
