A Swiss or Austrian Alpine valley appears in the background of this faded Kodachrome or early color slide, the mountains rising with the particular blue-grey tone of distant peaks seen through fifties film stock. A bare-branched tree stands in the foreground, its skeletal form oddly monumental against what appears to be a modest lodge or resort building, the kind of structure that promised refined continental hospitality to postwar Americans with the newly disposable income to reach it. The composition is hazy and slightly out of focus—not from damage but from the limitations of early color slide optics at distance—and the whole scene has the slightly washed-out quality of someone pointing a tourist camera at a view they were supposed to find memorable but that the camera could not quite catch. The white picket fence and what appears to be cultivated shrubs suggest this was someone's managed resort property, a place where nature was encouraged to appear picturesque rather than wild. The building itself, readable only in outline through the overexposed sky, represents the confident postwar moment when Americans believed you could bring European elegance to an American mountainside if you built something solid enough and charged accordingly.
