The bride stands dead center because someone has told her, correctly, that this is the one day she outranks everyone in the room, including her own mother. Her veil is pinned into a crown of fabric flowers, a construction that took longer to assemble than the ceremony itself will take to perform, and her cascading bouquet reaches nearly to her hem, the 1960s having decided that understatement was for other decades.
Her father stands slightly apart in a dark three-piece suit, hands loosely clasped, wearing the particular smile of a man who has been assured his only job today is to stand there and not say anything regrettable. He is doing that job well. The doorway behind them, with its glimpse of another room caught in a mirror, suggests this portrait was taken not in a church or a studio but in someone's own house, before the cars arrived.
The woman in the green suit is the mother of the bride, and her outfit is doing more work than anyone will admit: matching gloves, a corsage the exact size to signal importance without stealing focus, a hat built for a receiving line. She has followed the unwritten rule of the era to the letter, that a mother may look magnificent at her daughter's wedding provided she never once looks like she is trying.
