The dress runs to a full ballerina-length skirt of tulle over satin, the kind that required a seamstress, a bus trip to the fabric store, and a mother with strong opinions, because in the 1950s a wedding gown was assumed to be worn once and remembered forever. She holds the bouquet the way etiquette books instructed, low and centered, and looks at the camera with the specific calm of a woman who has just finished the part of the day everyone warned her would be nerve-wracking.
He stands in a white dinner jacket, which was the acceptable formalwear for a groom who wanted to look festive without outranking the minister, bow tie straight, boutonniere pinned by someone else's careful hands. The plastic altar flowers and the brocade curtain behind them were standard church-hall furnishings of the era, rented or borrowed, meant to look permanent for exactly one afternoon a week.
Her cat-eye glasses are the one detail nobody thought to remove for the photograph, proof that even a day built entirely around appearances still had to accommodate actual eyesight.
