On a warm summer day in the 1950s, a young couple stood on a church lawn for the portrait that would prove the whole enterprise had taken place. The groom wore a pale grey double-breasted suit, which was the era's way of signalling that a man had dressed up as far as he was prepared to go without renting a tuxedo, and the slight squint behind his wire-rimmed glasses suggests he has already calculated how many hours until this part is over. The bride, by contrast, has committed fully: a lace-trimmed cathedral veil that pools behind her on the grass, a satin gown built to be seen from the back of a church, and a clutch of red roses resting on what appears to be a white prayer book, because the 1950s required that the solemnity of marriage be cross-referenced against the solemnity of scripture at every opportunity. Behind them, just visible through the trimmed hedge, sits a late-1940s American sedan, parked with the casual permanence of someone who assumed they'd be out in an hour. The whole scene is a precise record of the postwar American wedding template — the outdoor portrait on the lawn, the matching formality that wasn't quite formal, the certainty that this was exactly how it was supposed to be done — captured at the precise moment before anyone thought to question whether any of it was necessary.
