A blonde girl of maybe eight or nine stands in her family's front yard wearing a white cape fastened at the shoulder with a corsage, the kind of costume that meant nothing and everything in the 1950s suburban imagination. Behind her sits a modest single-story house with a neat pitched roof and matching white trim, the kind of house America built thousands of in that decade on the theory that owning one would solve the problem of being human. The brown wooden fence and manicured evergreens speak to a household that believed in visible order as a form of citizenship. She has turned to face the camera with the careful, slightly bewildered expression of a child who has been dressed up for a purpose she does not entirely understand—a school pageant, a garden party, a photographer's appointment—and who knows that standing still and looking composed is now her only job. The cape, which reads like something between a costume and a cape one might wear to a piano recital, suggests that her parents lived in a world where even childhood required a certain formal presentation.
