Easter Sunday in postwar America had a dress code, and someone enforced it with full conviction. The girl standing in this suburban front yard has been assembled for the occasion with the precision of a military inspection: a full-skirted organdy dress in pale pink, a pearl necklace, a floral headpiece, and white gloves at her wrist — the complete mid-century Easter ensemble that department stores sold as a single moral argument about what spring required of a family.

The house behind her is the practical two-story cape that went up by the tens of thousands across American suburbs in the late 1940s and early 1950s, its clapboard siding and brick foundation the architectural signature of a nation that had decided prosperity looked like this. The bare young tree beside her puts the date firmly in early April, the shrubs still weeks from leafing out, the whole yard caught in that awkward week when the calendar insists it is spring and the landscape has not yet agreed.

The late-1950s sedan parked in the driveway represents the one morning a year the whole family coordinated around a single event. She is smiling in the slightly performed way of a child who has been told three times this morning to stop fidgeting, and who has now decided that smiling is the fastest route to lunch.
