At a 1950s outdoor wedding reception somewhere on a well-kept suburban lawn, the bride has already changed the sequence of the day by opening a gift before sitting down, which in that era was considered both acceptable and a performance requiring an audience. Her gown is mint green — not white — a choice that would have been noted by every woman present and filed away as either daring or practical, the two categories the 1950s frequently collapsed into one. The groom stands beside her in a pale summer suit and horn-rimmed glasses, looking at the gift with the attentive expression of a man who has learned that the correct move at this moment is to look attentive. The gown's skirt is so voluminous it has effectively claimed its own postal district, which was the point: fullness was structural ambition, and a bride who could afford enough taffeta was making a statement about the future. They are both looking down at a small wrapped box with a red bow, which will turn out to be something for the kitchen, and they will say it is exactly what they wanted.
