Someone propped this baby upright on the good sofa, the one with the heavy floral brocade that would outlast three administrations, and aimed the camera before the moment collapsed. The snake plant on its clay pot in the corner was doing its job perfectly, since sansevieria was the houseplant of choice for people who wanted greenery without responsibility, and it required nothing but the memory of water.

The lace curtain behind the sofa back was standard-issue for the decade, the kind bought by the yard and hung with the confidence of a family that believed in privacy from the street but not from posterity. The baby's expression suggests genuine surprise at being sat up at all, arms still curled in the reflexive newborn fold, socks slightly too large, having not yet developed the muscle control to object to any of this.

Nobody in the room was thinking about archives. They were thinking about getting one usable picture before the baby toppled sideways into the cushions, which is exactly the kind of ordinary ambition that, decades later, turns out to be the whole point of the photograph.
