The infant is only days old, judging by the unfixed stare and the hair that has not yet decided which direction it grows, and someone has already dressed him in a matching set from the going-home wardrobe every 1950s mother assembled well in advance. The quilted bedspread and the borrowed hospital-style gown suggest this picture was taken at the point of return, when a woman still in her nightclothes finally sat down with the baby on home ground instead of a maternity-ward bassinet.
She is smiling the specific smile of someone who has just been handed the single most important object of her life and is still calculating how not to drop it. The available light comes only from a window out of frame, because flash photography of newborns was considered faintly barbaric by the informal customs of the era, and the family snapshot camera was rarely loaded with anything faster than daylight film.
No one in this room is thinking about the picture. That is what makes it worth keeping.
