半袖を着た三人の男性がセディメンタリーな崖の地際に立っており、そうした露出した層序は普通の斜面を教科書へと変えている。一人は小さな赤いノートを持っており、これは防水紙とGPSマーカーが現れる前の標準的なその時代の野外日誌である。彼らは岩盤に身を寄せており、地質学は十分に凝視することで解決できると信じている人々に特有の自信を持っている。

誰も安全帽をかぶっていない。1960年代では、落石はいまだに神の行為と見なされており、大学の保険事務所が対処すべき責任ではなかったからである。黄色い服を着た若い男性はより低くしゃがみ、実際に観察を行い、彼の後ろの白いシャツを着た二人組は説明と影を提供している。この時期の野外調査写真では誰も笑顔を見せることはまれであり、岩石層をまばたきながら見つめることは重大な事柄であり、そのように構成されていたからである。

崖そのものは帯状で砕けており、数百万年間同じ方法で浸食されており、このノートが提出され忘れられた後もずっと浸食され続けるであろう。男性たちは岩盤との四十分間を人間の知識への有意義な貢献として扱い、合計すると千のような午後を通じて、彼らは時折正しかった。
