Three men in short sleeves stand at the base of a sedimentary outcrop, the kind of exposed layering that turns an ordinary hillside into a textbook. One holds a small red notebook, the standard-issue field journal of the era, before waterproof paper and GPS pins made such things quaint. They lean in close to the rock face with the particular confidence of people who believe geology can be settled by staring hard enough.

Nobody wears a hard hat, because in the 1960s a rockfall was still considered an act of God rather than a liability the university's insurance office needed to address. The younger man in yellow crouches lower, doing the actual looking, while the white-shirted pair behind him supply commentary and shadow. Fieldwork photographs from this period rarely show anyone smiling, since squinting at rock strata was serious business and posed as such.

The outcrop itself, banded and crumbling, has been eroding the same way for millions of years and will keep doing so long after this notebook is filed and forgotten. The men treat forty minutes with a rock face as a meaningful contribution to human knowledge, and in the aggregate, across a thousand such afternoons, they were occasionally right.
