He is bent double over a patch of scrubby grass, the posture of a man who has found something worth the effort of getting down there, which in the 1960s usually meant a mineral specimen, a fossil, or a piece of quartz that would later sit on a shelf and be pointed out to guests. The exposed gray rock face beside him has the raw, freshly broken look of a quarry cut rather than a natural weathering, the kind of place amateur collectors sought out precisely because the earth had already done the hard work of opening itself up.

Rockhounding was a respectable weekend pursuit then, equal parts science club and treasure hunt, requiring only sturdy trousers, a sun hat, and the conviction that this particular hillside held something the last several thousand visitors had overlooked. The gravel spoil heaps behind him suggest other hands had been digging here before, with more industrial intent and less curiosity.

Nobody photographs the moment of disappointment, only the moment of promise, which is exactly what this is: a man stooped over a hole, certain that the next few inches of dirt will justify the whole drive out.
