かつて丘陵地だったその場所に、誰かが非常に大きな穴を掘り出した。二人の男性が整った襟元のシャツを着て、その中心部へ歩み寄り、割れた岩盤の壁を見つめている。あたかもそれが自ら説明を与えてくれるかのような態度で。これが1960年代の採石場視察における標準的なポーズである。手は緩く、足は確実に、この程度の規模ならば作業は順調に進んでいるはずだという自信に満ちた男たちの姿勢。

フレーム内に機械類は見当たらない。これは珍しくない光景である。交代時間の間に撮影されたもので、風が採掘跡を吹き抜ける音だけが聞こえ、その操業は、ほんの一瞬の間、産業的な掘削作業というより思索的な何かに見えたであろう。白いシャツは、この男が労働中の鉱夫ではなく、訪問者、技師、あるいは所有者—他の者がすでに為した仕事を時おり査察し承認することが職務である男であることを示唆している。

彼らの上方の斜面には、その尾根に沿ってなお灌木が生い茂っており、岩盤に覆われる前の最後の緑の帯である。これは全体的に今や深さではなく表面であった採掘跡が、かつては地表面であったことの証左である。誰かがある時点で、地面が上にあるより下にある方がより価値があると決定した。ここにその結果としての窪地があり、この掘削作業とは何も関係のない二人の男性によって賞賛されている。
