三人の若い男たちが車を路肩に寄せた。山脈がそれを要求したのだ。その時代のあらゆる砂漠ドライブと同じように、地質学は自明であり、写真に値すると想定されていた。二人は中古車を査察する男のように屋根に身をもたれさせ、5000万年前の隆起ではなく、三人目は白いTシャツを着て離れて立ち、後になって誰もが覚えているはずの唯一の土産になる景色に既に飽きている。
車そのものは、日光をつかまえたクロムが輝いて角度をつけて駐車されていたが、停車の本当の理由だった。1960年代のロードトリップの論理では、車が景色に連れていき、景色は主に短い間そこに立つためだけに存在し、その後また中に戻った。
フレームの中にいる誰も山の名前を知っているようには見えず、誰もそれが重要だと思わなかった。風景はまだそこにある。車は、支払い予定中なので、ない。
