誰かが考えた近代的水族館とは、魚を横から眺められるだけでなく、決定的なことに、ガラス張りの天井を通して上からも鑑賞できる水槽であった――魚を観察するという問題を、魚たちが好む角度以外のあらゆる角度から見られるようにすることで「解決」した設計である。この水槽には、かなりの大きさのナマズ数匹と、コイあるいは同様の底生魚らしきものが収められている。これらの生き物は野生では濁った水と物陰で過ごすものだが、ここでは明るい天井照明の下のガラス箱に移され、ひげの一本一本、斑点の一つ一つまで、入場料を払った一般客の目にさらされている。時は1950年代、アメリカが自然を捕らえてガラスの向こうに置き、手軽に観察できるようにすることは、自然の改良であると同時に一種の教育でもあると信じていた時代である。水は澄んでおり、魚たちはおとなしく、この一連の仕組み全体には、金と時間をかけて建設され、これから永遠に――あるいは誰かが餌をやり忘れるまで――稼働し続けるものが持つ、満ち足りた目的意識が漂っている。

The historian's note

1950年代、アメリカ合衆国では公営・民営を問わず水族館が大きく拡大した。戦後の繁栄と家庭用アクアリウム飼育の普及により、商業的展示施設への需要が生まれたためである。ここに示された水槽の設計――天井をガラス張りにし、側面からも見られるようにしたもの――は、透明な展示と直接観察を、娯楽であると同時に非公式な科学教育の一形態とみなす当時の信念を反映している。大型のナマズとコイは、丈夫で見た目に特徴があり、既存の魚業者から入手可能であったことから、この時代の施設内水族館で人気のある展示種であった。この十年間、小規模な博物館や公園局、商業的アトラクションにとってカラーフィルムが入手しやすくなったことで、水族館生活の写真記録は日常的な作業となった。
