Someone's idea of the modern aquarium was a tank where the fish could be viewed from the side and, crucially, admired from above through a glass ceiling—a design that solved the problem of fish-watching by ensuring you could watch them from every angle except the one they preferred. The tank holds several substantial catfish and what appears to be a carp or similar bottom-feeder, creatures that in the wild spend their time in murk and shade but here have been relocated to a glass box under bright overhead light where their every whisker and spot marking is visible to the paying public. This is the 1950s, when America believed that capturing nature and putting it behind glass for convenient inspection was both an improvement on nature and a form of education. The water is clear, the fish are obliging, and the whole arrangement has the satisfied purposefulness of something that cost money and time to build and will now run forever, or until someone forgets to feed them.
The historian's note
Public and private aquariums expanded significantly in the United States during the 1950s as post-war prosperity and the popularization of home aquarium keeping created demand for commercial display facilities. The tank design shown here—with overhead glass and side viewing—reflects the period's faith in transparent display and direct observation as forms of both entertainment and informal science education. Large catfish and carp were popular specimens in institutional aquariums of this era, being hardy, visually distinctive, and available through established fish suppliers. The photographic documentation of aquarium life became routine during this decade as color film stock became more accessible to small museums, parks departments, and commercial attractions.
