A couple on a recreational motorboat moves through a Florida canal lined with ornamental plantings and native palms, the kind of leisure activity that became a defining marker of post-war middle-class tourism in the state. The woman in the foreground wears the bright, saturated colors that Kodachrome film rendered with such aggressive cheerfulness that they almost looked like propaganda for American contentment. Behind them, white flowers and dwarf palms suggest a developed waterfront property or a manicured park setting—the kind of place where the newly prosperous could rent a boat for an afternoon and feel, briefly, like they owned a piece of paradise. The blue sky and the boat's deliberate slowness suggest this is a sightseeing excursion, the sort of outing that filled Sunday supplements with photographs of families discovering Florida, which by 1950 had stopped being an isolated swamp and become a plausible weekend destination for anyone with a car and a few days to spare. The whole scene is organized around the simple proposition that a boat, a pretty waterway, and a clear day constituted a complete leisure experience.
