誰かが膝まで雪に埋もれて立ち、ボックスカメラを冬の低い太陽へ真っすぐ向け、それでもシャッターを切った。肉眼で美しく見える光景なら、フィルムもきっと同意するだろうという、1960年代のアマチュアらしい自信に満ちた思い込みからである。フィルムは同意しなかった。太陽は枝の背後で柔らかく白飛びした星のように潰れ、前景はほぼ黒くなり、白樺は逆光の中でインクの筆致のようなものへと縮小されている。

これは、まともに信頼できる露出計を誰も持っていなかった時代の家庭写真にありがちな、典型的な失敗のパターンである――明るい方へレンズを向ける、なぜならそこにこそ美しい部分があるからだ。自らの白い重みで撓むほど雪を積んだ枝こそが、この外出そのものの目的であり、森がこう着飾った姿を見るためだけに歩いてきたはずだった。しかし実際にカメラが記録したのは、カメラが手に負えなかったものの方であり、本当の森は記憶の中に残された。

残っているのは木々の写真というより、冬に向かって目を細める行為の写真であり、その方がむしろ正直な記録だと言えるかもしれない。1960年代、誰も気軽な午後のスナップのために三脚やフィルターを森へ持ち込んだりはしなかった。それは木立の下、露出不足のあらゆる部分に表れている。
